Free throws and three-point baskets at opportune times in the final five minutes secured a 79-71 victory for Luther over visiting University of Northwestern (MN).
Trailing 38-33 at halftime, the Eagles chipped away at the Norse lead and held a 62-60 advantage with 4:45 remaining. The Norse responded with three-point baskets by Cale Austin, Nathan Meyer and Jake Martin, plus added four free throws in the final 19 seconds to secure the win.
Luther had a balanced scoring attack led by Martin with 16. Meyer was credited with 13, while Cody Kliethermes and Aaron Huber chipped in 12 and 11 respectively. Austin was one shy of double digits with nine. Cory Schultz led the Norse with a career high eight rebounds.
The win levels Luther's overall record to 4-4, while Northwestern fell to 1-8.
The Norse will return to action Dec. 29-30 when they will play in the Just A Game Holiday Shootout in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. Luther will play Augustana (IL) on the 29th and UW-Superior on the 30th. Both games will begin at 7:30 p.m.
