A lay-up by Nathan Meyer, plus free throws by Christian Wright, Cody Kliethermes and Cale Austin in the final 1:22, secured a 70-66 opening season victory for Luther over St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn.
Wright got things going with two free throws that gave the Norse the lead for good (65-64) at the 1:22 mark. Meyer extended the lead to three with a lay-up at 1:09, and Kliethermes and Austin knocked down a combined three free throws in the final 13 seconds to seal the deal.
Jake Martin led the Norse with 19 points and seven rebounds. Kliethermes was next with 10, followed by Meyer with nine and Wright with eight.
Luther will return to action Nov. 21-22 when it will play in the UW-Oshkosh Tournament. The Norse will face Finlandia in a semifinal game on Nov. 21 at 5:00 p.m.
