Five Norse placed at the 2014 Luther Open, three in the Silver Division, and two in the Elite Division.
In the Silver Division (first-year wrestlers), Julian Gendreau claimed the title at 125. Gendreau defeated Logan Hanselmann (unattached) from Wisconsin 4-3 in the title bout.
Derek Stork finished the day with a record of 5-2 and a fourth place finish at 174. After dropping his first match, he went on to post five consecutive wins that included four falls, before losing 6-1 to Tyler Lutes of Wartburg in the third place match.
At 133, Gareth Ballard placed sixth en route to a record of 2-3 for the day.
In the Elite Division, Oregon State University transfer Drew Van Anrooy, highlighted the Norse efforts with a second place finish at 141. Van Anrooy defeated University of Iowa's Topher Carton 4-3 in the semifinal match and then lost 4-1 to Hawkeye Josh Dziewa in the title bout.
Blake Letney placed fourth at 165. Letney advanced to the semifinals and was eliminated from the championship bracket by Brandon Kingsley from the University of Minnesota by fall. In the third place match, Letney was defeated 5-4 by unattached wrestler Darius Wright.
The Norse will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 22 when they will travel to Minneapolis for the Augsburg Open. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.
