After dropping the first two sets, Luther battled back and sent this Iowa Conference match into a fifth and deciding set. Unfortunately for Norse fans, Simpson pulled out a come-from-behind fifth set win 16-14. Simpson secured the 3-2 decision giving both squads a record of 1-1 in the Iowa Conference. Set scores were 24-26, 18-25, 25-23, 25-21 and 14-16.
As is the case in a five set match, multiple players recorded double digit kill totals. McKinzy Lohberger led all attackers with 22. She had only eight attack errors en route to a team best .298 attack percentage. Natalee Johnson was next with 15, while both Kelsey Sorensen and Leah Broderick were credited with 10.
Lindsey Ryan dished out 51 assists and Taylor Gaide tallied a team best 25 digs. Carly Rusek and Brandi Knupp also recorded 11 and 10 digs respectively.
Luther's team attack percentage was .140 compared to Simpson's .210. The Storm also won the battle at the net recording 11 total blocks to Luther's four.
The loss drops Luther's overall record to 9-6. Simpson improved to 6-6.
Luther travels to Loras College this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 26-27, for the Iowa Conference (IIAC) vs. Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference (NACC) Crossover Tournament. Luther begins play on Friday at 1:00 p.m. vs. Lakeland College.
