The Luther women’s tennis team opened its spring season with a match-up against St. Olaf at the Owatonna Tennis & Fitness Center in Owatonna, Minn. The Norse grabbed an early lead in doubles, but could not hold off a late Ole charge in singles, falling 6-3 to St. Olaf.
Caroline Treis and Hailey Johnson overcame an early deficit and raced to an (8-4) victory at No. 2 doubles, knocking off Bailey Kent and Andrea Jumes. Jenna Myers and Olivia Heitz maintained their perfect mark in dual match play, defeating Caitlin Owsley and Kristi Kroker (8-5) at No. 3. Leading 2-0, the Norse looked to grab a doubles sweep, but the Oles rallied for a (9-8 (7-3)) victory at No. 1 where Lisa Hall and Maya MacGibbon edged out Luther’s Lola White-Baer and Maggie Helms.
Hall defeated White-Baer (7-5, 6-1) at No. 1 singles to level the match at 2-2. Treis then dropped a (6-4, 6-3) decision to MacGibbon at No. 3 to put St. Olaf in front, 3-2. Luther’s Addy Riley played a tight match with St. Olaf’s Lizzie Carlson at No. 6, but dropped a (4-6, 6-1, (10-6)) decision, putting St. Olaf ahead by a 4-2 margin. Another rally from St. Olaf, this time by Kroker at No. 2, clinched the meet for the Oles. Helms won the first set before falling in a decisive third set super tie-breaker (2-6, 6-4, (10-4)). St. Olaf’s lead grew to 6-2 when Erin Hynes beat Luther’s Megan Wachholz (6-1, 6-0), but Lauren Welch salvaged a singles point for the Norse with her (6-4, 6-2) victory against Kent at No. 4.
The Norse are now 8-4 overall this season. The team returns to action on Sunday, March 9 with a match against UW-La Crosse in Winona, Minn.
