Luther scored 21 points in the final 11:29 and defeated Simpson 42-35 this afternoon in Indianola. Luther held a 21-7 lead with a little under six minutes left in the second quarter, but watched that lead disappear as the Storm scored 28 unanswered points, capped off with a 25-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown with 11:29 left in the game.
Luther's come-from-behind victory started with a seven play, 69-yard drive that was capped off with a 13-yard touchdown pass from JJ Sirios to Jon Cochrane. Four minutes later, Luther tied the score (35-35) when Sirios scored on a one-yard plunge that ended a six-play, 50-yard drive. The Norse defense held the Storm to a three-and-out on the very next series, setting up the seven-play, 67-yard game winning drive. Christian Moore scored the winning touchdown from three-yards out with just 21 ticks left on the clock.
Offensively, the Norse tallied 465 yards of total offense that included 372 on the ground. Josh Vos and Moore both rushed for 100 yards. Vos rushed for 128 yards on 23 carries and three touchdowns, while Moore rushed for 100 yards on 19 rushing attempts. Sirios was next with 86 yards.
It was also record setting afternoon for the Norse offense that finished the year with 3,379 yards rushing, setting a new single season school record. The old mark of 3,204 was set in 1963. Vos also became the first back since All-American Tyler Sherden (1,575) in 2007 to rush for over 1,000 yards. Vos finished the season with 1,042 and 14 touchdowns.
Defensively, Luther held the Storm to 216 yards of total offense. It was a balanced defensive effort with Joshua Olerud posting a team best seven tackles. He was followed by Matt Scheidle (6), Darren Hill (5), Aric Elton (5) and Matt Larson (5).
The win snapped a three-game losing streak to the Storm and gives the Norse an overall record of 5-5, the first time they have achieved a .500 record since 2010.
