The Luther College men’s tennis team won its fifth straight match with a 7-2 win over Loras in Dubuque, Iowa.
The two squads started the match with the bottom three singles spots and the Norse came away with a 2-1 lead. Matt Knutson earned a (6-3, 6-3) win at No. 5 against Jeff Kasel while Sean Brown won by the same score over Ulises Hernandez at No. 4. The Duhawks tallied a point when Garett Prusha defeated Luther’s Jason Knutson (6-4, 5-7, 6-4) at No. 6.
The Norse won all three matches in the second round of play to clinch the team victory. James Ayer beat Brian Falvey (6-3, 6-3) at No. 2 to make it 3-1. Bellio rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the first set to win (7-6, 6-3) against Jon Moore at No. 1. Sam Cychosz held off Noah Schmall at No. 3 by a (6-4, 7-6) margin to earn the fifth point for the Norse.
Loras’ Moore and Falvey knocked off Luther’s Bellio and Brown by an (8-5) margin at No. 1 doubles to make it a 5-2 score, but the Norse won the final two doubles matches in convincing fashion to make it a 7-2 final. Ayer and Cychosz rolled past Hernandez and Kasel (8-1) at No. 2 while Matt Knutson and Aaron Ford beat Schmall and Prusha (8-3) to close out the meet.
The Norse are now 11-9 overall and 4-1 in the IIAC.
