Luther traveled to Storm Lake, Iowa and Buena Vista University for the Iowa Conference opener for both clubs. This afternoon, the Norse and Beavers split the first two games of the four-game weekend series with Luther winning game one 4-1 and the Beavers winning the nightcap 5-2.
Alex Byom (3-0) allowed one run on five hits in 4 2/3 innings of work. Byom faced 22 batters, walked three and struck out two. Alec Knop (1) was credited with the save striking out three of the eight hitters he faced.
The Norse scored a run in both the second and third innings and two in the fifth. Thomas Weber drove in a run with a double in the second, while Zach Hendrikson, Aldon Severson and Austen Graham were all credited with one RBI.
In game two, Buena Vista scored four runs on six hits in the bottom of the seventh to secure the come-from-behind victory.
Danny Smith (1-1), who was credited with the loss, had allowed just one hit as he entered the seventh. Smith faced 26 batters, did not give up a walk and struck out two.
Eric Pittman drove in Luther's first run in the third and Aldon Severson drove in the final Norse run in the seventh.
The split gives Luther a record of 5-5 overall, while Buena Vista is now 7-5. Tomorrow's double header is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
