"Fukushima is not Chernobyl? Don't be so sure"
Sarah Phillips will address the issues of nuclear technology in different cultural contexts. She will consider whether "peaceful" nuclear technology is possible, focusing on two nuclear disasters: recent Fukushima and famous Chernobyl. Based on post-disaster ethnographic work in both sites, she will argue that independent of the system (Japanese, Soviet), nuclear technology requires obfuscation in multiple domains (medicine, science, governance) that create heavily scientized discourses and assumptions that assure us nuclear reactoars are safe neighbors, while actually disregarding public concerns.
