Tyler Wedemeier propelled Luther to a 60-54 overtime win over Coe College tonight at the Regents Center. The win kept the Norse tied atop the Iowa Conference standings with Buena Vista University at 10-3. The victory also clinched at least the number two seed for the six-team Iowa Conference Tournament that begins next week.
In a tight defensive contest featuring eight lead changes and seven ties, Luther took a 23-21 lead into the halftime break. The Norse extended their lead to 44-37 on a pair of free throws by Brian Nnaoji with 5:59 remaining. Coe answered with a 10-3 run to close out regulation play, capped off by a David Mataloni jumper that sent the game into overtime. In the overtime period the Norse outscored the Kohawks 13-7 en route to the victory.
Luther shot 44 percent from the field, while holding Coe to only 31 percent, that included a 3-for-18 performance from behind the three-point line.
Wedemeier posted his fourth consecutive double-double and 11th of the season, scoring 21 points and collecting 16 rebounds. He also had six blocked shots tying his career high. Nnaoji tallied 13 points off the bench and Zach Matos-Pritchard chipped in 11. John Androus fell one shy of double digits with nine.
Mataloni led the Kohawks with 18 points. Seth Light also produced a double-double thanks to 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The overtime was Luther's sixth of the season and third in the last four games. The Norse are now 4-2 in overtime.
Luther improved to 17-7 overall. Coe dropped to 8-5 in the Iowa Conference and 15-9 overall.
The Norse close out the regular season at home against Wartburg College this Saturday, Feb. 16. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
