The Luther College women's basketball was defeated by Coe College in a hard fought home battle tonight at the Regents Center 64-56.
Coe led the Norse at intermission 32-24 thanks to an 8-3 run in the final six minutes of play of the first half. The Kohawks extended their lead to as many as 15 early in the second frame, but Luther chipped away at the Kohawk lead and cut the deficit to 45-43 with 11:45 left. The two-point deficit was as close as the Norse would get the rest of the way.
Offensively, Luther shot 33 percent that included a 4-of-15 effort from behind the three-point line. Coe shot 45 percent and out rebounded the Norse 42-32.
Luther was led by Carrie Kilen who posted a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds. The double-double was Kilen's second in the past three games. Taylor Johnson, who played just 23 minutes due to foul trouble, led the team with 13 points. Lyndsi Woolems chipped in eight while Taylor Jenks and Kylie Romeo both had seven.
Coe's Megan Hayes led all scorers with 21 points off the bench. Hayes was 9-of-11 from the field and 3-for-4 from the charity stripe. Kayla Waskow had 12 points, while Mary Halvorson and Hannah Breitbach chipped in eight each.
Despite the loss, Luther secured the sixth and final spot for the Iowa Conference Tournament that begins next week. Coe also secured a spot in the tournament tonight. The Norse will be making their first appearance in the tournament in three years.
The loss gives Luther a record of 5-8 in the Iowa Conference, 13-11 overall. Coe improved to 6-7, 13-11 overall.
Luther completes the regular season at home Saturday, Feb. 16 against Wartburg College. Saturday's game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
