The Luther College men’s tennis team opened Iowa Conference play with a match against Coe on Saturday, April 6in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Ramesh Karki pulled out a big win at No. 1 singles, but that was the lone point for the Norse as the Kohawks rolled to an 8-1 victory.
Coe picked up the first point of the day with an (8-3) win at No. 2 doubles, but the other two doubles matches were tightly contested. Ramesh Karki and Quinn Foley battled back and forth with Coe’s Noah Sprinkel and Curtis Newman before dropping an (8-5) decision at No. 1. Matt Bellio and Sean Brown also played a close match at No. 3, falling (8-6) to Sean Stokstad and Michael Janssen.
Karki lost the opening set 6-1 to Sprinkel at No. 1 singles, but rallied to win the second set by a 6-4 count. Trailing in the third set super tie-breaker 9-6, Karki once again fought back and won the match (1-6, 6-4, 13-11). Nick Mozena and James Ayer both had close first sets at No. 2 and No. 4 while Torstein Jystad lost a third set super tie-breaker to Stokstad (0-6, 7-5, (10-8)) at No. 5.
Luther drops to 6-8 overall and 0-1 in the IIAC.
