Day One Results: For the first time since 2010 Luther completed the first day of competition at the NCAA III National Championships with three All-Americans. The Norse entered the All-America round with five wrestlers alive.
The Norse will enter the second day of action in 11th place with 21 points.
Trent Flegel (197) became a two-time All-American defeating Nathan Schmitz of Concordia-Moorhead with a two-point take down with just six seconds left in the match and posted a 7-5 victory.
Evan Obert (133) and Kyle Windquist (141) earned All-America honors for the first time of their careers. Obert defeated Jacoby Bergerson of Concordia-Moorhead 5-2, while Windquist defeated No. 4 seed Jake Fredricksen of UW-Whitewater by fall in the third overtime at 8:59
At 165, Garrett Bonte dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 8 seed Jordan Schulte of UW-Stevens Point. Bonte completed his season with a record of 22-12.
At 184, Jayden DeVilbiss lost by fall 0:28 to Daniel Olsen of Wheaton College. DeVilbiss completes his season with a record of 26-14.
Day Two Results:
Evan Obert (133) finished eighth at his first National Tournament appearance. Obert was defeated by Dalton Bullard of Elmhurst by fall at 1:12 in the seventh place match. Obert, only a sophomore, completed the 2012-13 campaign with a record of 29-10. He will enter his junior year with a career mark of 47-22.
Kyle Windquist (141) completed his Luther career with an eighth place finish.Windquist was defeated by Ces Antista of Williams 9-5 in the seventh place match.
This was the second time Windquist had qualified for the national finale, but the first time he had earned All-America honors. Windquist, who spent the majority of the season out of the line-up due to an injury, finished with a record of 13-9, 36-21 during his two-year career in a Norse uniform.
Trent Flegel ended his career as a two-time All-American. Flegel became the first Luther wrestler since Jason Pyle (2009-10) to earn back-to-back All-America honors. Flegel placed eighth after dropping a 7-5 decision to Matthew Heschsel of Augsburg in the seventh place match. Flegel ends his season with a record of 31-14. His two-year record in a Luther record was 63-24.
