Luther took another step towards claiming an Iowa Conference championship as the Norse swept the Beavers of Buena Vista University 5-3, 11-2 (6) on a very cold afternoon in Decorah.
In game one, the Norse pounded out 15 hits and scored twice in the first and fifth innings and added a run in the sixth. Katie Wieland went 3-for-3 that included a solo home run in the fifth, her seventh of the season. Carli Radil, Alise Miller and Kristin Winter were both 2-for-4 and Lindsey Uphoff was 2-for-2.
Amanda Witzlib (15-2) went the distance in the circle. She allowed three runs on six hits, walked two and struck out 12.
In the nightcap, Luther exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the sweep. In this frame, Natalie Stockman hit her first career home run, a pinch hit three-run blast to left field. Five batters later, Miller hit a walk-off three-run shot to left, her seventh of the year.
Radil also drove in three runs. She hit a two-run double in the third and drove in a run on a single in the sixth. Radil ended the nightcap going 2-for-4 as did Wieland. Miller and Anna Strien were both 3-for-3.
Annie Versnik (9-0) got the start and allowed two runs on four hits in four innings of work. Topanga Skiles picked up her second save of the season not allowing a hit in the final two innings of the ball game.
The sweep gives Luther an Iowa Conference record of 10-0, 32-2 overall. Buena Vista fell to 6-6, 15-16-1. The two wins were huge as Coe and Central split this afternoon, which gives Luther a three-game lead with four games remaining on the regular season schedule.
Luther will return to Iowa Conference action this Saturday when it will host University of Dubuque. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
