THEY SAY, I SAY: THE MOVES THAT MATTER IN ACADEMIC WRITING

  • Date: Thursday, August 21, 2014
  • Time: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
  • Location: Loyalty Hall, Conference Room 100

This workshop introduces faculty to They Say/ I Say by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein, the main writing text in Paideia 111-112 that is intended to help students write in all disciplines – particularly in the sciences and social sciences.  As the publisher notes, this widely used book “demystifies academic writing,” teaching students certain “key rhetorical moves . . . . the most important of which is to summarize what others have said (‘they say’) to set up one’s own argument (‘I say’).”  Whether or not workshop participants adopt this book for their own courses, our discussion of They Say/ I Say will provide insight into the challenges – and dare we say the joys?-- of teaching writing within the disciplines.  Participants will be given a free copy of They Say/ I Say, 2nd edition.

Facilitator: Martin Klammer, Professor of English and Writing Director;

Participants will receive a $25 stipend for this half-day workshop.
