The Luther women's basketball team punched their ticket to the NCAA III National Tournament for the first time since 2007, defeating Wartburg College 61-53 in the championship game of the Iowa Conference Tournament.
Leading 31-22 at halftime, the Norse fell behind 49-45 with just over eight minutes left in the game. After tying the score at 49-49 at the six minute mark, the Norse put together a 12-4 run down the stretch to claim the tournament title.
The Wartburg inside trio of Kailey Kladivo, Allison Emrich and Miranda Murphy combined for 26 of the Knights 53 points. Wartburg also outrebounded Luther 46-24 and recorded 17 second chance points. On the flip side, Luther forced Wartburg to turn the ball over 23 times, that led to 23 points.
Offensively, Luther was led by Meagan Koepnick with 19 and Moran Lonning with 11. Solveig Nelson chipped in eight off the bench.
The win gives Luther an overall record of 22-5. Wartburg, the first No. 5 seed to advance to the Iowa Conference Tournament championship game, ends its season with a mark of 17-11.
