For the second time in as many matches, Luther advanced to the next round of the Iowa Conference Tournament by shootout.
Twenty six minutes into this semifinal match at the University of Dubuque, Ellie Schmid scored her fourth goal of the year, assisted by McKenzie Lundquist (1), that gave the Norse an early 1-0 lead.
The Spartans Amanda Chlebek sent the game into extra frames, scoring on a header off a corner kick with just 18 seconds left in the match.
Neither team was able to score in the two over time periods sending this match into a shootout.
Luther shot first in the shootout and Marta Springer's shot was good. Dubuque's Lauren Cangelosi followed and also scored. The next two attempts by both teams were missed. McKenzie Lundquist then gave the Norse a 2-1 advantage. The Spartans Jaida Breese answered to make it 2-2. Halina Pyzdrowski then scored, followed by Dubuque's goalkeeper Victoria Roethler also scoring. After five shots each the score was 3-3.
Heading into the sixth player, Sommer Stevens found the back of the net, giving the Norse a 4-3 lead. The Spartans Carissa Brown shot and hit the crossbar and Luther secured the victory.
Officially, the match ended 1-1 in double overtime, with Luther advancing in a shootout 4-3.
The tie gives Luther an overall record of 7-9-2. Dubuque ends it season with a record of 9-4-4.
Luther will now travel to the No. 1 seed of the tournament, No. 19 Loras College, on Saturday, Nov. 4. Stat time for this championship match is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The winner of the championship match will earn the league's automatic berth to the NCAA III National Tournament.
