Luther kicked-off the 2014 season with a sweep of UW-Platteville at Lenz Field, Jacksonville, Ill. The Norse won game one 12-6 and posted an 8-7 victory in the nightcap.
In game one, Luther scored multiple runs in the first three innings, the fifth and eighth frames. The Norse pounded out 16 hits, led by Czenvic Rojer who was 4-for-5 with four RBI in his Luther debut.
Andy Briggs, Eric Pittman and Joel Martin also had multiple hit games. Martin drove in three runs, while Pittman drove in two.
Teddy Klingsporn picked up his first collegiate win pitching the final five innings. Alec Knop started the game and threw four complete. Knop allowed two runs on three hits and struckout 11.
In game two, Eric Pittman hit a walk-off single to left-center field that scored Joel Martin, giving the Norse an 8-7 victory. One inning earlier, Luther tallied four runs and led 7-5, only to see Platteville tie the game with two runs in the top of the ninth.
Briggs, Pittman and Carlos Pineda combined for seven of Luther's nine hits. Pineda was 2-for-4, Briggs was 2-for-5 and Pittman was 2-for-4 and scored three runs.
Cody Reimer picked up the win in relief. Reimer pitched the final three frames allowing two runs on three hits and struck out three. Matt McKinney got the start and went six innings. McKinney allowed five runs on eight hits and fanned eight.
Luther (2-0) will face North Central (IL) tomorrow at this same location. First game is scheduled for Noon.
