Luther and Dubuque split the first two games of their four game series this afternoon in Decorah. The Norse won game one 1-0 and the Spartans came from behind to defeat the Norse 6-3 in the nightcap.
In game one, Alec Knop pitched a three-hit shutout en route to his sixth win of the season. Knop, who has been the Norse ace all season, struck out seven and walked two while lowering his ERA to team best 2.33.
Brian Paulsrud drove in the game winner in the second frame. Paulsrud hit a double to left field that drove in Mitch Knippenberg, who started the frame with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Spartans.
Knippenberg and Andy Briggs combined for four on the Norse six hits off the Spartans Josh Eastman.
In the nightcap, Dubuque scored five runs on four hits in the top of the ninth to secure the victory. The Norse scored a run in the third, sixth and seventh innings. Teddy Klingsporn threw eight complete innings in a no decision outing. Klingsporn allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out three.
The split knocked both Luther and Dubuque out of the Iowa Conference six-team tournament. The Norse and Spartans will enter tomorrow's final conference twin bill of the year with identical league records of 8-18.
