Spectators here in Decorah were treated to two well played baseball games, but unfortunately for Norse fans, the Knights of Wartburg College posted victories of 3-1 and 5-4 in 10 innings.
In game one, a couple of Norse errors in the fifth frame led to two Knight unearned runs that proved to be the difference in the ball game. Luther took a 1-0 lead in the third when Andy Briggs drove in Mitch Knippenberg with a single to left. The Knights added an insurance run in the sixth.
Blake Peterson picked up a tough loss going the distance on the mound. Peterson allowed four hits, walked three and struck out two.
It took 10 innings in the nightcap before a winner was decided. With the score tied 4-4 in the top of the 10th, Wartburg's Blake Wilson drove in the game winner with a single to right field.
Luther held a 4-2 lead after six, but Wartburg leveled the score with two runs in the top of the seventh.
Alex Byom was credited with the loss in relief. Byom took over with two outs in the seventh. He allowed one run on four hits, walked one and struck out one.
The two losses drops Luther's Iowa Conference record to 9-15, 13-19 overall. Wartburg secured the regular season title and is now 20-4 in league play, 31-7 overall.
The Norse will wrap up the regular season schedule this Friday and Saturday, May 3-4 when they will host Central College for a four-game series.
