The Luther men’s tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to nationally ranked UW-Whitewater on at the Premier Tennis & Fitness Club in Janesville, Wis. The Norse played competitive matches at several spots, but were unable to secure a win as the Warhawks earned the sweep.
Ramesh Karki and Quinn Foley had the closest doubles match, falling (8-6) to Byron Balkin and Brian Klein at No. 1. Karki broke serve to level the match at 6-6, but were broken right back and unable to hold off a late charge from the Warhawks. James Ayer and Kyle Appel also played a solid match at No. 2, but lost (8-4) to Jake Humphreys and Scott Butler. Torstein Jystad and Isaiah Mayerchak lost (8-2) to Cam Laktash and Marty Beck at No. 3.
Jystad performed admirably at No. 2 singles, eventually being edged out (4-6, 6-3, (10-8)) by Balkin. Appel played a strong first set before losing (7-5, 6-1) to Rithwick Raman at No. 3. The Warhawks swept the other four matches in straight sets to take the win.
Luther is now 8-4 with all four losses coming against regionally ranked opponents. A pair of those foes, UW-Whitewater (No. 23) and University of Chicago (No. 28), also hold national rankings.
