The Earth and Environment in Italy program is designed for students with majors or significant interest in earth system science, enthusiasm for field-based learning and an interest in the interactions between humans and the environment. Specific learning goals are:

• To deepen knowledge in the earth sciences and in the interactions between people and the environment through the use of hands-on field-based activities and collaborative small group projects.
• To experience the nature of scientific research and to develop skills in designing and carrying out independent, in-depth research.
• To develop skills in the visual communication of scientific ideas and increase understanding of human perception and sense of the aesthetic.
• To attain working knowledge of the Italian language and culture to help facilitate field research and interactions with local people.
