During the summer of 2011, forty-five faculty registered for the three workshops listed below. The workshop conversations were especially interesting because of this interdisciplinary perspective. The performances at the Great River Shakespeare Festival and American Player’s Theatre were also excellent. Students from English 261 “Shakespeare Performed” attended same American Player’s Theatre Tempest on September 24.
Shakespeare's 1 Henry IV on the Page and Stage (Summer 2011)
This workshop will explore Shakespeare’s great history play 1 Henry IV. The workshop will hopefully include Paideia I faculty, who are including the play in Paideia I this fall; advisors and other faculty should find it helpful to get to know one of the Paideia I texts in company with Paideia I faculty. The workshop will have three components: a discussion of the text (Friday, July 8, 1:00-4:00), attendance at the Winona, MN Great River Shakespeare Festival 1 Henry IV performance (Saturday, July 9, 2:00), and a follow-up potluck discussion in Winona. The same workshop will be repeated, with other participants, on July 11 and 12. Co-sponsored by the Dean's Office Summer Faculty Development Workshop Program.
Shakespeare's Tempest on the Page and Stage (Summer 2011)
This workshop will explore Shakespeare’s “final” play, The Tempest. The workshop will have two components: a discussion of the text (Friday, August 19, 1:00-4:00) and attendance at the Spring Green, WI, American Player’s Theatre Tempest performance (Sunday, August 21, 6:00). Funding will support a copy of the play, van transportation, and a ticket to the performance. Co-sponsored by the Dean's Office Summer Faculty Development Workshop Program.
Shakespeare's King Lear on the Page and Stage (Summer 2012)
This workshop will explore what may be the greatest of Shakespeare’s plays. The workshop will include several components: a discussion of the playtext (Tuesday, July 10, 1:00-4:00); a Wednesday, July 11 workshop led by a professional actor/teacher from the Great River Shakespeare Festival, focusing on the basics of theatrical embodiment, with hints about embodiment practices for classroom teachers (10:00 am); lunch at Winona State; attendance at the GRSF King Lear (1:00), followed by a talk-back with selected actors and the director. (Depending on faculty preferences, the day will conclude with a possible dinner stop on the return from Winona.)
