Summer Seminars at Luther — June 15–20

You are invited to apply for a unique summer experience for high school juniors and seniors held on the Luther College campus. Our Summer Science and Teacher Education Seminars are designed to provide an intensive summer experience for students who have traditionally been underrepresented in higher education. Specifically, the program is targeted to ethnic minority students and/or first-generation college students who show great promise for college entrance and eventual service to their professions and communities.

The Summer Science Seminars began in 1995 provides a challenging experience for students interested in careers in the sciences. The intensive six-day program, funded by Luther College, is designed to provide students with hands-on experiences. Students will work with professors and college students on real research projects in laboratories and participate in meaningful class discussions.

Students in the Teacher Education Seminar, along side professors and college students, will demonstrate teaching opportunities as they explore ways to teach in K-12 schools that get beyond textbooks and written tests. Professors ad current students in the Luther education program will collaborate with participants in developing teaching methods that will enhance opportunities for learning.

Selection

The selection process for the seminars is competitive. Students must have a minimum 2.5 GPA in high school and a class rank in the top 50 percent. Applicants should anticipate graduating from high school in 2015 or 2016.

Applications are accepted until May 30, 2014. Only completed applications will be considered for the program. Completed applications include the online application form, current transcript, and payment of the application fee. Once accepted, student must submit the health consent and photo release forms, which can be found at the bottom of the page.

Cost

There is a $50.00 non refundable application fee, due at the time of applying. An additional $25.00 will be charged for use of the college provided transportation.  The college will provide program materials, room and board and costs associated with off-campus field trips.
