Who are Asians and Pacific Islanders? A rather broad term, “Asian-Pacific” encompasses the entire Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. AAPI covers at least forty-eight ethnic categories, in addition to multi-ethnic and multiracial combinations. There are more than 200 spoken languages and dialects. Each group has distinctive immigration histories and disparities among socioeconomic, educational, and cultural backgrounds. Celebrated each spring, Asian American Pacific Islander Month celebrates the histories, traditions and culture of Asian American Pacific Islanders in the United States.
