Each summer for the past few years Prof. Dan Davis has served as the archaeological director on deep-sea research expeditions to the Black Sea aboard the E/V Nautilus sponsored by Dr. Robert Ballard’s Institute for Exploration, the Ocean Exploration Trust, and National Geographic. In 2011 and 2012 Dan and a team of Luther students participated in the survey of the deep sea off the north coast of Turkey in the Black Sea and discovered 11 shipwrecks ranging in date between the 4th century B.C. and modern times.
In 2013, Dan and another team of Luther students will assist oceanographic researchers from the University of Rhode Island in an oceanographic survey of the Aegean coast of Turkey using a new suite of deep-sea research vehicles, including an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). Our goal: to create a comprehensive acoustic map of a large area of seabed, and to map geological features and shipwrecks with a high degree of precision and resolution.
