Spring 2013

Dear Classmate,

I (Michele) am excited to write my very first class agent letter.  I am hoping that you are reading this on a sunny, pleasant spring day, because I am writing this on a rainy, icy, cold, wintery day from my home in Iowa.  Earlier today my husband (Carter), our two daughters, and I enjoyed brunch at Peace Dining Room with our oldest daughter, Kirsten, and a few of her friends.  Eating at Peace was more wonderful than I remembered it from my Luther days – fresh fruits, yogurt, homemade granola & breads, muffins & pastries, pancakes, eggs Benedict & hash browns, omelets made as you like, and a variety of fabulous desserts – and “all-you-can-eat.”  We enjoyed the food and visiting with Kirsten and her friends.  The Luther students serving us were very polite and the live piano music playing in the background set the mood for a wonderful brunch – what a great work-study position to have, I thought.  Even on a cold, rainy February day, the view from Peace Dining Room is awesome.  I would encourage all of you to visit Peace on your next visit to Luther; you won’t regret it. 

Carter and I have spent the last four years serving on the Parents Council.  We have been on campus nearly every week of the last four fall soccer seasons to watch Kirsten play soccer for the Norse.  We have attended the last four Christmas at Luther productions.  It has been wonderful to be able to reconnect with our alma mater in a different way.  We are truly blessed to have had the experience of being Luther College students.  Being the parent of a Luther student feels good and is also a blessing; Luther provides an education that goes beyond what can be learned in the classroom.  Serving on the Parents Council has given me a new appreciation for how a college grows, handles challenges, sets goals and strives to achieve goals, and provides the best well-rounded atmosphere it can in developing the student to take the next big step in life.

The campus looks great!  And I thought it was great 30 years ago!  You will be so excited to see the many improvements this fall when you come back for our 30-year class reunion at Homecoming 2013, October 4-6.  Renovations of both Dieseth and Miller halls were completed over the past two summers.  The swimming pool should be ready for the 2013/2014 swim season; it will be an awesome addition to the athletic facilities.  It is through your generous support and involvement that Luther College can continue to change and grow.  Thank you for your generosity.  I hope to see you this fall at our class reunion; it’s always fun to run into Luther alums, even after 30 years.  I can’t believe it!

MIKE OSTERMEYER and CINDY ZAUTCKE ‘85 live in Mequon, Wis. Mike was selected for inclusion, by his peers, in The Best Lawyers in America 2013. He is a real estate lawyer for Quarles and Brady.
