Giving List

Spring 2013

Greetings!

Our winter in the Midwest was not as mild as last year’s, so the coming of spring is a bit sweeter. Spring will bring a major change to the Luther community as President Richard Torgerson spends his last weeks at Luther, after fourteen years of leadership and service. There are a number of celebrations planned to honor the Torgerson presidency, and to celebrate the success of the Sesquicentennial Fund. I hope there is one in a city near you, as it will be a wonderful opportunity to celebrate with fellow alumni and friends of Luther.

During President Torgerson’s tenure, the college had a number of undertakings. Some of those include renovations of residence halls, the Dahl Centennial Union, Loyalty Hall, and Valders. The Legends Fitness for Life Center, the Sampson-Hoffland Laboratories, and the Center for the Arts were all constructed. The wind tubine and solar array were put into use, and the Aquatic Center is nearing completion.

The Norse football team has a new head coach. Aaron Hafner will be the 13th head coach in Luther’s 94-year history of varsity football. Coach Hafner comes to Luther from William Penn University.

It is an exciting time at Luther, and I encourage you to stay connected. Gifts of any size are valued by the entire Luther community. On behalf of that community, thank you for your gifts to Luther this past year, as they have a lasting impact on the college.

Obituary
Carolie Balder Kuehn of Wausau, Wis., died from ovarian cancer on Dec. 19, 2011, at age 53. After graduating from Luther with a management major, she earned a juris doctorate from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1983. Carolie married Robert Kuehn in 1986, and they became the parents of two children, Ben and Elena.  Carolie worked as a trust officer at M&I Wealth Management for 24 years, and her clients benefited from her wisdom, compassion, friendship, and sense of humor. She was an active member of First United Methodist church, where she participated in choral music and the hand bell choir. Carolie served on the United Methodist Board of Finance; she also served as secretary to the Marathon County Bar Association and as a leader of the local Trusts and Estate Planners Forum for many years. She is survived by her husband, Robert Kuehn; son, Benjamin Kuehn; daughter, Elena Kuehn; brother, Roy "Chip" Balder; sisters, Beth Balder-Schroeder and Jeanne Brock; father- and mother-in-law, Frank and Nathlie Kuehn; several brothers- and sisters-in-law; and many special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Don't forget your Annual Fund giving!
Each year nearly 9,000 alumni, parents, and friends support the Annual Fund with gifts from $5 to $50,000. Strong support from alumni helps Luther secure additional funds from foundations and corporations, and your gift each year helps us reach our goal of 27% alumni giving.  Here’s how your class—and surrounding classes—did in 2012:

Class of 1979 total giving in 2012:  $51,307 from 28% of the class

Class of 1980 total giving in 2012:  $208,309 from 22% of the class

Class of 1981 total giving in 2012:  $68,520 from 22% of the class

Your gift can boost the impact your class has on current students!  Please use the enclosed envelope or visit www.givenow.luther.edu to show your support.  Thank you!

WITH SINCERE GRATITUDE:
This list includes all gifts received January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2012. Making a gift each and every year is an investment in the lives of Luther students and a show of support for the Luther College community.  Thank you for your support of Luther College through your giving.
