Spring 2013

Dear Luther Friends,

Greetings  from "up north," where the ground is still covered with lovely snow, but the lengthening days hint at spring. It seems that every one of these spring letters starts with a comment about winter, which makes sense since I'm usually looking out at a bright white landscape while writing. Last year the comment was probably about having almost no winter, but this year was great - snow and cold and deep ice on the lake.  We hope you are all happy wherever you find yourselves during these months.  Flowers might be in bloom when you read this.

Have you been following Luther events?  The search continues for a new president, and there may be a new one named by the time you receive this.  We get Luther news online, which is great for seeing what's happening on campus. Try it!  Just log on to www.luther.edu.

While you're visiting Luther's website, click on "sustainability" at the bottom of the opening page.  How wonderful to see what Luther is doing to go "green."  Wind is generating 1/3 of the electricity needed.  Huge solar panels help heat.  There's composting and recycling.  We should all be proud of our alma mater.  While you're at it, check out what's going on with Luther sports, music, science, drama―it's all there.  If nothing else, it's fun to see campus pictures...nostalgia, you know.

We could use more news from you.  Are you busy being retired? Babysitting grandchildren? Traveling? Dick Edwards wrote a book...anyone else that ambitious? For you retired folks...don't you sometimes wonder how you had time to work?  Are you on Facebook?  You can look for me and if I'm lucky, I'll see a message, and if I'm really lucky, I'll figure out how to answer you.  (This might all come after a tutorial.)

Well, Luther friends....."thoughts to thee oft turn," as our alma mater song says, and one of my recent thoughts is...HOMECOMING 2014, October 10-12!  I don't want to shock you, but it will be our 50th, FIFTIETH, class reunion!  Make plans now to be among those the current students look at and think, "It will be forever before I'm that old." Isn't that what you thought 50 years ago?! And while you're remembering Luther, help out however you can―send students, speak positively, and of course help financially.

Soli Deo Gloria

Don't forget your Annual Fund giving!
Each year nearly 9,000 alumni, parents, and friends support the Annual Fund with gifts from $5 to $50,000. Strong support from alumni helps Luther secure additional funds from foundations and corporations, and your gift each year helps us reach our goal of 27% alumni giving.  Here’s how your class—and surrounding classes—did in 2012:

Class of 1963 total giving in 2012:  $107,423 from 41% of the class

Class of 1964 total giving in 2012:  $420,129 from 35% of the class

Class of 1965 total giving in 2012:  $65,489 from 35% of the class

Your gift can boost the impact your class has on current students!  Please use the enclosed envelope or visit www.givenow.luther.edu to show your support.  Thank you!

WITH SINCERE GRATITUDE:
This list includes all gifts received January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2012. Making a gift each and every year is an investment in the lives of Luther students and a show of support for the Luther College community.  Thank you for your support of Luther College through your giving.
