Class of 1966 Spring 2017 Letter

Spring 2017

Dear Friends,

We were all saddened this past year to lose Professor Weston Noble ’43. It is hard to imagine Luther without his presence, and yet, I know that for many of you, his legacy lives on in many ways. One of his characteristics that always impressed me was his demeanor. He could quietly and graciously explain his point. Perhaps in this day and age we yearn for such a quality because it seems rare.

At one of the reunion choirs we had finished the first number and Weston smiled and quietly said to us, “Now that you have reminded your neighbor of just how well you can sing, this time try listening to him/her.” The point was not lost on any of us, for we were all guilty! I think of his reminder often. We talk, we ask questions, but do not listen to the responses. Our politicians are not the only ones guilty of this. One of my favorite Bible verses is, “Be still and know that I am God.”

We often play the “Waiting Game.” We wait for the perfect job, the perfect spouse, the perfect retirement. Why is it so hard to live in the NOW? It was great to reminisce at our 50th reunion, and we were reminded of all the new and exciting things Luther has done, is doing, and will do. We can live in Luther’s future in many ways, but especially by responding to our on-going commitment to give financially.

We were also saddened by the death of another friend, Terry Johnson, of Midland, Texas. He died July 19, 2016, at age 73. At Luther Terry majored in history and was ordained into the American Lutheran Church on May 31, 1970. While at Luther, Terry met his future wife, Sharon Ann Hilstrom ’66. Over the years, Terry served as lead pastor for a number of Iowa churches. Terry's profound devotion to Christ, his engaging and welcoming spirit, and his wonderful sense of humor (which was required as a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan) allowed him to serve the spiritual needs of many people over the past 45 years. Terry is survived by his son and daughter and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon.

We rejoice with Dave Rovang of Forest Lake, Minn., who has retired as a USAF and Northwest pilot, and with Bruce Omundson and Lois Baumer, who were married on August 27, 2016.
