Class of 1965 Fall Letter

Fall 2012

Dear Classmates,

Hard to believe 2012 is already drawing to a close. For Larry and me, time is flying and we are trying to take advantage of every moment. The "unbelievable" is approaching in the next year; most of us will be turning 70! Happy birthday to us all.

As you already are aware, President Torgerson will be stepping down as Luther's president at the end of the school year. He and Judy will be moving to a condo in Edina, Minn. They're looking forward to spending time with their grandchildren and doing some volunteering for causes they support. There will be 18 events to celebrate the Torgersons’ service―as well as the end of the Sesquicentennial Fund campaign―starting in January and running through May, with the big celebration slated for May.  Meanwhile, the search is underway to find a new president to take the helm. Many qualified men and women have applied. In January the candidates will be interviewed in Minneapolis.  Recommendations by the committee will be submitted to the board in mid-February.

For those of you who are cyclists, you might want to check out Decorah's completed bike trail. The extension just completed runs from the "cut" to the newly built bridge over Highway 9 (just east of Highway 52). The bridge is a beautiful entrance to Decorah. The bike trail continues out to the fish hatchery, where the eagles’ nest is located. The nest is now the size of a queen-size bed. The trail continues east toward Walmart, along the river and back into town.

News from our classmates:

Paul Olson’s son, Eric Christian Olson, has been featured as a regular cast member on the CBS TV series NCIS Los Angeles, portraying Detective Marty Deeks. He has also appeared in movies and has co-hosted Entertainment Tonight.  Wow!

Larry and I had a delightful August evening in Decorah with classmates Joann (Harr) and Dick Hemp, Babs (Moen) and Rich Amundson ’64, and Bob and Ann (Aaker) Naslund ’66.  Lots of laughs and lots of conversation.  Everyone looks “young” and happy.

We wish you a blessed Christmas and a healthy New Year!

Don’t forget your Annual Fund giving!

Each year nearly 9,500 alumni, parents, and friends support the Annual Fund with gifts from $5 to $50,000.  Strong support from alumni helps Luther secure additional funds from foundations and corporations, and your gift each year helps us to reach our goal of 27% alumni giving to the Annual Fund.  Here’s how your class is doing so far this year:

Have you made your 2012 gift to Luther?  Only 18 more gifts are needed to reach 27% for your class.  Please visit to make a difference for Luther students.  Thank you!

Please note: Your Spring 2013 class agent letter will include a listing of your classmates who gave to Luther during 2012.  Be sure to make your gift before December 31 to be included.
