There are multiple methods for researching different career options. Many students prefer to begin by reading about different careers through books and web sites. Additionally, it is a wise practice to identify individuals who perform the type of work that you are investigating. If you are considering a career as a forensic scientist, it is a good idea for you to speak with an individual who does this type of work for a living. We call these types of contacts "informational interviews." This is also an excellent strategy to begin developing a network of professional contacts. • Identify a career path that is of interest to you. Consider the nature of the work in the context of your interests and values.
• Discuss your interests with your faculty advisor and/or a career counselor in the Career Center
• Conduct some preliminary research through the Internet and by using the resources in the Career Resource Library.
• Contact the Career Center to get assistance with identifying a professional in the career you are considering. Perhaps a Luther graduate is doing the type of work you are investigating!

Occupational Outlook Handbook Occupational data compiled by the U.S. Department of Labor. Information on a broad range of careers includes: nature of the work, working conditions, employment, training and other qualifications, job outlook, earnings, and a listing of related occupations. Additional resources are provided for further inquiry.

O*NET: Occupational Information Network
An additional occupational database providing detailed information on more than 950 different occupations. Information about the nature of the work, educational requirements, demand for the position, and earning potential are all provided.

WetFeet: Helping you make smarter career decisions
Volumes of information on different industries and occupations is provided. WetFeet also managed "Discussion Boards" that allow you to post questions to others who are also engaged in career-related research. Some of the resources and services provided by WetFeet do require registration or payment.

From government to investment banking to consulting, Vault is an excellent research to learn more about these, and many other, industries and the careers they provide.
