Internship Options
Academic Credit
Many students are surprised and pleased to learn that they can earn academic credit by participating in an internship. In order to do this, it is critical that you meet with the faculty internship coordinator in the department in which you hope to earn credit. Each department has different processes and standards in awarding internship credit. For example, some departments may require that you keep a journal and complete a final paper as part of your experience. In addition, you and your supervisor will evaluate your performance and experience. Again, your faculty internship coordinator and the Assistant Director For Experiential Learning in the Career Center will help you to get the necessary paperwork rolling if you wish to earn academic credit during your internship.
Recognition
This option allows students who do not need or want academic credit to gain formal recognition of their internship. If you select this option you will receive support and assistance from Luther in planning your internship. Prior to the internship you will work with the Assistant Director For Experiential Learning in the Career Center to formulate learning objectives to ensure that you can articulate what you hope to gain from the internship. You, your site supervisor, and the internship coordinator will work together in formulating a learning contract to ensure that everyone is in agreement on your activities during the internship and to minimize misunderstandings. During your internship you will complete evaluations of your experience and if time and proximity allow, receive a site visit by the internship coordinator. You will have the opportunity to attend a wrap-up session following the experience at which you will reflect on your experience along with other interns.
Unaffiliated
In this option you elect not to have any formal tie to Luther College during your internship. You are welcome to use the Career Center resources to locate a position, but during the internship you are on your own. If you choose this option, we still strongly encourage you to outline what objectives you hope to accomplish as a result of your experience and share then with your supervisor. By doing so you drastically increase the chances that your internship will be a beneficial experience.
