Creating your Dream Career Path (While keeping both feet on the ground)

As we are all trying to plan out the rest of our college careers - whether it be classes, internships, or summer jobs- we strive to keep everything related to our ideal career path. What is your dream career path? If you’re anything like me, that dream career and company can seem just a touch out of reach. Here is some advice on how to start planning out how you can attain your goals with a head on your shoulders and both feet on the ground.

When thinking of what my next steps should be in advancing my education, I take the time to completely zone out and reflect on my core strengths, weaknesses and interests. Being honest with yourself will allow you to find a career option that will be most rewarding. I was given a very valuable piece of advice…What is something you would do even if you weren’t getting paid to do it?  Take notes, reflect on your experiences, and figure out how you can realistically make your dreams happen.

The biggest conflict that comes into play while you start chasing your dreams is thinking about each step in the process logically. OK, so one of your dreams is to get an overseas internship? Take the time to write out everything that would need to happen before you could get to that point; sufficient qualifications, applications, interviews, airplane tickets, housing, language courses, and the list goes on. But, it is not impossible! Hard work, organized planning, and logical thinking can pay off.

Planning out this dream career path can be made easier by figuring out why you want to do each of these things. If you get to the interview stage, an employer doesn’t just want to know what you want to do, but why you have a passion for these things. Finding out the ‘why’ aspect can significantly clarify your thoughts. So, even though this advice may be a little vague, hopefully it gets you thinking about where you want to end up, and how you want to start getting there.
