Emma Spoon Receives NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

March 6, 2012

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has announced that Luther College All-America cross-country runner Emma Spoon has received an NCAA postgraduate scholarship.

The NCAA awarded one-time, non-renewable educational grants of $7,500 to 58 student-athletes—29 men and 29 women who competed in fall sports.

To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must be nominated by his or her athletic department, have an overall grade point average of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale) or its equivalent, and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The student-athlete must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution, and intercollegiate athletics. The student-athlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student. The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women.

"Emma has exceptional service, academic, and athletic credentials,” commented Rob Larson, Luther College Faculty Athletic Representative. “She is a great example of a student not only maintaining the balance between being a student and an athlete but also excelling at both."

Spoon completed her cross-country career last fall, earning All-America honors after placing 18th in a field of 277 runners at the 2011 NCAA III National Cross Country Championships. She has also earned all-Central Region honors twice—placing sixth in 2010 and fourth in 2011—and captured two Iowa Conference individual championships. A two-time league MVP, Spoon helped lead the Norse to Iowa Conference and Central Region team championships in 2010 as well as two trips to the national championships. The Norse placed sixth at the national meet in 2010 and 23rd in 2011.

Spoon, a biology major, has accumulative grade point average of 4.0. She plans on attending graduate school for education or medicine in the future.

Luther College has a long tradition of student-athletes receiving NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Spoon is the 33rd student-athlete and the eighth student-athlete in the past six years to receive this award.

Spoon, a 2008 graduate of Verona Area High School, is the daughter of Ed and Paulette Spoon of Verona, Wis.
