Josh White '97 Named Luther's Young Alumni Award Winner of 2010

May 20, 2010

Josh White, M.D., co-director of World Wide Village (WWV) Community Health Initiative, has been named the Luther College Young Alumni Award recipient for 2010.

The Young Alumni Award recognizes Luther alumni who have graduated in the past 15 years and who have rendered notable service to their profession and society in their vocation or avocation.

The award will be presented to White at the college’s commencement ceremony Sunday, May 23.

Luther Young Alumni Award recipients have demonstrated significant professional achievement, leadership abilities and distinctive service to Luther or society. Their record of commitment, leadership, character and ethic exemplify the college mission.

A native of Decorah, Iowa, and a 1997 graduate of Luther, White majored in biology at Luther and earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa. In 2005 he served his residency at Bayfield Medical Center in Springfield, Mass.

After completing his residency, White responded to a call from a former classmate to help staff a weeklong mobile medical clinic in Haiti.

The mobile clinic site selections are based on the locations perceived by WWV to have the greatest need of medical services. Mobile clinics range out into the countryside, mountains and villages that have limited access to professional health care. Frequently, hundreds of people come to a mobile clinic site for medical attention.

White hopes that “in making a deeper impact, the population of these villages will be healthy enough to devote themselves to addressing other needs and perhaps begin to make tiny steps out of the poverty cycle. Perhaps to some, we can begin to make a real difference.”

White hopes that his work to improve the health and medical care of the communities served by WWV will be a step toward relieving poverty and improving the standard of living of people in poverty-stricken areas of the world.

White works as an emergency physician with Emergency Physicians Professional Associates in the Twin Cities, where he lives with his wife, Kim, and daughter Corrine.
