Over 50 students joined faculty, staff, and alumni in helping to restore habitat in Hickory Ridge Woods on Nov 4. European buckthorn crowds out native species of plants and provides poor habitat for birds. By the end of the sunny fall afternoon, the volunteers had cleared a large patch by cutting down and ripping out the invader. Cutting down invasives is surprisingly satisfying work! While there's much work left to be done, the blitz made an excellent start. The blitz was organized by biology professor Eric Baack, Luther College's land interns (Max Molzahn, Jasaon Hagemeier, and Kimberly Stocks), Bio
Club, and Eco.
Thanks to Alumni Affairs, APO,and professors Jon Jensen and Kirk Larsen for their help with the organization, and watchfor the next blitz in the spring of 2010.
