The biology department at Luther College is housed in Sampson Hoffland Laboratories and east wing of Valders Hall of Science. Biology facilities include 13 teaching labs which connect to research labs for collaborative faculty-student research, teaching and research support and storage areas, 14 faculty offices, and more than 4,800 square feet of student study space.
The biology department provides excellent support facilities for teaching and student research, including a new greenhouse, microscopy facility, natural history collections, and diverse on-campus natural areas.
Students can use these facilities for their research. They may search for developmental mutants in the greenhouse, analyze hormone levels of athletes to assess the effects of training, investigate biofilm formation in bacteria using a scanning laser confocal microscope, and study the effect of prairie reconstruction on biodiversity.
