Iowa MAA

Ruth is an active member of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). Over the years she has held several offices in the Iowa section of the MAA:

  • Coordinator of the Iowa Collegiate Mathematics Competition, 2003-present. In this capacity I coordinate the annual competition, finding a problem writer, checking the problems for correctness, preparing all materials for the competition, organize the competition, and coordinate the grading afterwards.   • Governor of the Iowa section of the MAA, July 2001-June 2004. In this capacity I attended the bi-annual national board of governors meeting of the MAA, representing the Iowa section and reporting back to the section on MAA business from the board. The meetings were held in the summer at MathFest, and in January at the joint MAA/AMS meetings.
  • Chair of the Iowa section of the MAA, 1998/99. In this capacity I organized the meeting of the Iowa section of the MAA at Luther College April 17-18, 1998.
  • Chair elect of the Iowa section of the MAA, 1997/98. In this capacity I was in charge of screening talks for the meeting of the Iowa section of MAA at Iowa State University, April 11-12, 1997.

Membership in professional organizations:

  • Member of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) since 1990.
  • Member of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) 1985-2005.
  • Member of Project Kaleidoscope (PKAL), Faculty for the 21st Century. In 1995 I was on the nationwide selection committee to add new faculty members to this group. In 1996 I was one of the organizers for the workshop “Revitalizing Undergraduate Mathematics” at the University of Iowa, July 19-21 1996.
  • Member of Project CLUME (Cooperative Learning in Undergraduate Mathematics Education).
  • Member of Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) as consultant since January 2003.
