Mission Statement

The Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) at Luther College seeks to develop scholars who have gained the knowledge, values, critical thinking and psychomotor skills necessary to perform the various roles of an athletic trainer in today’s world, with the ability to adapt to changes in the future.


  • To staff the athletic training curriculum with personnel who provide excellent role models for athletic training students in academic achievement, performance and personal conduct.
  • To continue to improve each area of instruction by annual evaluations and modification of content and methodology as indicated.
  • To provide a positive setting for experiential learning through field experience assignments with the various athletic teams at Luther College.
  • To strive for a 100 percent success rate by athletic training students who sit for the BOC exams.


  • To annually attract eight prospective students to enroll at Luther College and declare a major in athletic training
  • To annually graduate at least six students having completed a major in athletic training
  • To develop athletic training students who consistently perform at a high level in the classroom (above a 2.75 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale).
  • To assist the athletic training student to master the educational competencies  in an efficient and effective manner.
  • To continue to enhance the resources of the educational program in athletic training.


All graduates of the Luther College Athletic Training Education Program will possess entry-level knowledge, skills, and values necessary to:

  • Demonstrate effective taping, bracing, padding, and wrapping skills.
  • Demonstrate strong critical thinking skills during assessments in all body regions.
  • Demonstrate strong clinical decision making skills regarding choice and application of treatment and referral procedures, therapeutic modalities, and exercise techniques.
  • Demonstrate proper documentation procedures.
  • Demonstrate the professional traits of an entry level athletic trainer.
