Photography and printmaking both have the potential to produce multiple original images through transfer processes.  However, photography primarily captures images, while printmaking primarily (re)creates images.  Printmaking courses at Luther focus on basic relief, intaglio and stencil processes that enable students to gain an understanding of the most essential characteristics of print imagery, along with an appreciation of how a "printmaking sensibility" might enrich and advance creative activity in other areas. Photography courses explore the production of multiple images through film-based, digital, silkscreen, and alternative processes.
