Center for the Arts

Luther College’s Center for the Arts houses the Art department, the Theatre/Dance department, and part of the Music department, creating a lively inter-arts atmosphere that fosters cooperation between the disciplines. The award-winning building has large instructional studios, including north-facing drawing and painting studios, a ceramic studio, a design lab, a printmaking studio with a relief press, a proof press, and an intaglio press, a papermill, a darkroom, two woodshops, two exhibition galleries, and a weaving room equipped with 18 looms. Sunnyside Café is located in the CFA atrium where students can enjoy coffee and cinnamon rolls.

Studios

Art majors are expected to work outside of class on independent studio projects in their free time. A studio draw at the beginning of each semester gives every declared art major the opportunity to get a personal studio for this purpose. The Korsrud painting studio has 24 individual studio spaces for independent student work. Windows around the perimeter of the building let in lots of natural light throughout the day. There are 8 studio spaces in the Storre sculpture studio for 3D work. The buildings have easels, paint stands, chairs, stools and tables for student use.

Galleries

Senior art majors exhibit their work in the Centennial Union Gallery or the Center for the Arts Gregerson Gallery. Additional galleries in various buildings on campus make fine art a prominent part of the Luther community by hosting one-person or group exhibitions by artists of regional, national, and international acclaim. Luther's many outdoor sculptures and parts of an expanding permanent fine arts collection are also on display throughout campus.

Close proximity to the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum in Decorah and interaction with the natural landscape of the region also add dimension to the study of art at Luther.
