Financial assistance is awarded to 95 percent of Luther's students and totals more than $20 million annually. The distribution of funds is based on need and merit, and the college considers transfer students for these funds on the same basis as it considers first-year applicants.
How to Apply for Financial Assistance
Step 1
Apply for admission to Luther.
Step 2
Obtain a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) from the financial assistance office at your current school, or Luther's Office of Student Financial Planning. Or complete the FAFSA online.
Complete the form carefully and send it in for processing. For priority consideration, your application must be received by the processor before March 1. Be sure to indicate on the application that you want a copy sent to:
- Iowa College Aid Commission (for Iowa residents)
- Luther College
- 700 College Drive
- Decorah, IA 52101
Step 3
Send a financial assistance transcript from all colleges previously attended to the Office of Student Financial Planning at Luther, even if you haven't received financial assistance in the past. You should also include a copy of your own and your parents' most recent federal tax returns.
Step 4
Investigate and apply for all outside sources of assistance you might be eligible to receive.
Many community organizations, churches, insurance companies, corporations, and employers give awards and matching grants based on financial need or academic achievement.
Step 5
Respond promptly to any requests from the Office of Student Financial Planning for more information. Be sure to notify Luther of your enrollment decision by the reply date on your financial assistance award.
