New Year, New Me (No Swans!?!)

I imagine that I have returned to Luther from further afield than most. After all, I did study at the University of Nottingham in the UK last year, where they say quaint things like, “Care for a cuppa?” and there are swans lounging about on the campus lake. It’s a real shocker, this whole being swan-free business. How is one meant to feel poetically accomplished every day if he cannot meander down and gaze upon a noble bird? I mean, we have squirrels in abundance; but I’ve tried, and it’s just not the same.

Apart from avian complaints, the return has been heartening. Luther is here, stalwart as ever. I have moved back into dear old Larsen, wooden-floored queen of the campus dorms. And a regular class schedule fits like a glove after an erratic Nottingham timetable. Oddly enough, I get to return in a dual manner: first, as a consummate and experienced senior; second, as a fresh student, who encounters unfamiliar faces at every turning and small details changed (different posters in the library, a tree that has vanished, a new composting system in the cafeteria). Being gone for a year will quickly render the familiar strange, or at least render you a stranger.

I like this though. It has meant that I get another go at the whole “remake yourself” thing that everyone is promised when they begin applying to colleges. I think that I’m doing better this time around because there’s so much less pressure. I know that I already have friends who support me and an academic method that works, but on top of this there is just enough unfamiliarity for me to meet with someone or something new each day, and I am confident enough to meet each in a new way.

In the ensuing weeks I look forward to telling you all more about myself and about my particular experiences at Luther College. I have quite the senior year lined up, so there should always be something interesting to talk about, but for now, I hope that you feel like you know me a little better. And until next time I wish you all the best.

    Eli,

Although I don't know much about swans, I could help you introduce chickens to the Luther campus! :) Thanks for the laughs. I look forward to reading more from you this year. Glad the year is off to a great start. Take care. Uncle Warren
