Hello everyone! I hope you’re having a great week!
January term is winding down here at Luther, and people who studied abroad this month are starting to return. They all have fantastic stories from their adventures, many of which you can read about on the J-term blogs! Hearing about their trips makes me super excited to study abroad during my time at Luther.
But even though I spent the month on campus instead of sailing around the Caribbean or gallivanting across Europe, I feel like I had a “staycation” right here in Decorah! Here are some of the highlights of my January:
Brandt Open Mic Night
Each year, Brandt Hall hosts a talent show in Marty’s, and every time I attend, I am amazed at how much talent is at Luther! My favorite act was bagpiping. It was fantastic!
Breakfast Club Program
The RAs in Larsen and Olson Halls put together a Breakfast Club program for our residents this month. We got some delicious muffins and breakfast-y snacks, and during the program, we watched The Breakfast Club and made fruit smoothies. I also made some bookmarks for the event about the importance of breakfast. We had a lot of fun!
Salsa Dancing Downtown
Every Friday night, from January to March, the Decorah Senior Center is hosting salsa dancing lessons. Last Friday, my friends and I decided to go. We had read about the lessons online, so we drove downtown together and…danced the salsa! There were people of all ages there, including many from Luther. It was really fun to get off campus and do something different.
Political Candidates in Decorah
With the Iowa caucus coming up in February, a lot of the major political candidates are coming through Decorah as part of their campaigns. Marco Rubio was at the Hotel Winneshiek in downtown Decorah on the seventeenth, and Bernie Sanders came to the Regents Center to speak this Sunday. It’s nice to be in a place that is frequented by the candidates, especially since this year’s presidential election will be the first I can vote in!
Movie Night with Friends
The other evening, my friends and I got together in Dieseth Hall and watched my favorite movie of all time, The Princess Bride. We made popcorn and spent the entire movie laughing and quoting our favorite lines. It was a great evening!
So overall, I’ve really enjoyed spending my J-term on campus! While I’m looking forward to the spring semester as well, I’m glad I got a little “staycation” in Decorah before next term begins. Between my fantastic class and the activities available this month, it has been a marvelous January!
