Experiencing Experiences

Hello everyone!

I hope you’re having a fantastic day so far!

I just got back from watching (and ushering for) a performance called Neil Berg’s 100 Years of Broadway, and it was fantastic. The show consisted of musical numbers from famous Broadway shows of the past 100 years, including songs from The Sound of Music, Rent, Phantom of the Opera, and many others, all performed by five terrifically talented Broadway actors accompanied by Neil Berg, a famous Broadway composer. After the show, the cast came out to sign autographs and take pictures with us. Truly, it was one of the most incredible experiences I’ve had at Luther.

What is even more amazing, though, is how many exciting experiences Luther has to offer. Whether they take the form of a big theatrical production, like this one, or simply an exciting classroom experience, every week I look back and realize that I’ve made fantastic new memories here. The professors really encourage people to get out and try new things, and it makes the college experience that much more wonderful.

Take, for instance, the ceramics class I’m taking this semester. We’re learning how to throw pottery on the wheel, something I’ve never learned to do before. It’s entirely different from any experience I’ve encountered, and it’s a ton of fun! The professor leaves the studio open for us to use at any time, and it’s such a place of inspiration and creativity. Every time I go to the studio is a great experience.

Other professors encourage us to go beyond the classroom and see the world as part of our education. In biology, we were given a group assignment to photograph plants, animals, and fungi to examine the biodiversity in Decorah. Bonus points were given for taking photographs off campus, so my group took a trip to Dunnings Springs, a beautiful waterfall close to campus. Not only did we have a fantastic time, but we found some amazing organisms, including a spider with an egg sac and several fossils.  I’m so glad I got to go out and appreciate what we are learning about in class in the real world – and enjoy the natural beauty of Decorah!

Even in my Pilates class, our instructor told us on Wednesday to go for a walk outside and come back at the end of class, because the weather was too beautiful not to exercise in the great outdoors. I wound up walking with and getting to know a new friend and taking some fun photographs along the way.

It’s the experiences like these – the new and unexpected – that make being at college so fantastic. And all of these experiences add up into one big Luther College experience that couldn’t be better.

I hope the rest of your week is fantastic!  I’m going to head to sleep now, which will also be a wonderful experience.  :)
