One of the Biggest Challenges Here: Conseguir Taxi

Monday, December 2
I like to think I’m a pretty flexible person. When something goes wrong I can usually recover from it fairly quickly. But there’s something about being unable to get a taxi time and time again that stresses me out more than almost everything here. It sounds ridiculous, but put yourself in this scenario for a second. You’re planning to go out and have a fun night with your friends tonight. You plan on meeting them in oh, 40 minutes or so, at a spot that is just 5 or 10 minutes away from your casa. Should be enough time to call a taxi service, right?

Guess again. I have spent nearly an hour calling taxi services, only to wait on the line for 5 minutes and be told that “they have no one in my neighborhood”.  I think my frustration is mostly driven by my sheer inability to wrap my mind around the fact that EVERY SINGLE SERVICE in the phonebook is busy/not in my area on a Tuesday night for heavens sakes. Half the time, I end up giving up, walking down to the closest main street to flag down the most legitimate taxi I can find (alone, in the dark – probably a bad idea – but how else can I get anywhere). Thankfully it’s a short walk. Plus I’m hyperaware during the entire ride. In fact the other day, one of the driver’s looked a little shady so I kept my hand on the door handle the whole time just in case I felt that need to jump out at any moment. That was probably a little excessive, but I like to err on the side of precaution.

Anyways, as you can probably imagine, after all this, I’m just kind of annoyed, on edge and want nothing but to drink an entire bottle of wine.

Slight exaggeration, but you get the idea.

HOWEVER you’ll be happy to hear that I am becoming less phased by this process every time and am slowly learning to just expect it! And laugh about it.
