I have spent the last two years being involved with the Student Activities Council here at Luther and this week marks the end of my time serving on the executive board for this school year.
The student activities council has served as a great opportunity for me to develop my leadership skills as I have spent my time at Luther College. SAC has challenged me to step out of my comfort zone, get involved on campus, and really taught me how to deal with time management, conflict management, and organization skills.
SAC consists of 12 committees ranging from Concerts, Diversity, Leadership and Cinema. I believe I have mentioned earlier that I had the opportunity to be on the Executive Board for the last two school years as one of the SAC Cinema Co-Chairs. This position requires me to help organize student movie nights on campus throughout the school year. This year my committee was challenged with bringing new ideas to campus as our previous arrangement had changed.
This school year I have had the opportunity to organize several movie nights with titles ranging from: Disney’s Brave, The Dark Knight Rises, The Bourne Supremacy, Perks of Being a Wallflower, When Harry Met Sally, and finally, tonight we are showing The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
I think it is pretty cool that we are able to show movies that are out of theatres, but not yet released on DVD for students to see on campus. It gives students a reason to come to our event, enjoy some free popcorn, and take a break from studying. I am hoping that tonight that we sell out our show because that would mean that all of our hard work throughout the school year has paid off.
I hope that in the future, our events are just as successful as they have been this year as we transition to having a new executive board. I know that my co-chair and my replacement will do a great job next year.
