Avoiding the Freshmen 15

A few weeks ago I read Mario's post about his experience with the Freshmen 15 and thought it was a really awesome story. I'll be honest and say that I was horrified of gaining the Freshmen 15 prior to arriving at Luther, so I thought I'd share with you today some of the great things Luther/Decorah has in place to keep the Freshmen 15 from occurring.

First of all, statistically, the Freshmen 15 doesn't exist (you can read an LA Times article about it here). The average college freshmen gains about three pounds, which is the same as those who don't attend college. The weight gain is more related to a maturing body than to an drastic increase in body fat. Of course, several people do gain a significant amount of weight during their freshman year, and I believe it's something to be conscious of, but it's not what it's truly hyped up to be. Luckily, Luther has several items in place to keep it from happening to you!

  • Luther has a physical activity requirement that must be completed before graduating: you must participate in a Fitness and Wellness class (a combination of lectures and work outs) as well as a skills class (like tennis or yoga). 
  • There are TONS of biking/walking/running trails in Decorah - most of them start within a mile from campus. (see attached picture)
  • Regents Center is full of great resources to stay fit: it offers an indoor track, weight room, a rock climbing wall, and open gym space amongst other things.
  • There are fitness classes that occur five days a week - free of charge! Classes include Tae Kwon Do, yoga, Zumba, a weight training class, Insanity, and more.
  • In addition to varsity athletics, most Luther students participate in a club or intramural sport. You can play volleyball, basketball, ultimate frisbee - even Quidditch!
  • There are student led dance groups, including a lyrical group and a hip hop group.
  • Once a week there is a Nutritionist on campus who can meet with students to discuss healthy, balanced eating on campus for your particular needs.

I know there are more resources available than what I just listed, but these are the ones that came to me off of the top of my head.

Clearly, Luther has a lot in place to help prevent the myth of the Freshmen 15 from turning into a reality.
