I had a great first full week interning at HAWC Partnerships for Children. This week I was fortunate enough to be able to go on six different home visits with Family Educators from HAWC’s Parents as Teachers program.
It was so much fun, because it gave me a chance to see what they do to help these families. It was also interesting because every home visit is different. The kids are different ages and at very different places developmentally. It’s like watching my Developmental Psychology textbook from last year come alive before me. It’s so interesting! It’s also a lot of fun to see what kinds of activities the family educators choose to engage in with the children in order to test their abilities and help them improve. Their curriculum actually gives them ideas on what kinds of toys to bring with on visits! Everything is planned out so that they are able to engage the kids in activities that will help or test them developmentally. It’s so interesting how it’s set up.
I’ve really enjoyed learning about what they do at HAWC, and being able to help out. They’re all so good at what they do and I feel so lucky to be able to tag along and observe and even participate sometimes! It’s so much fun when they let me lead activities with the children. The kids see that it’s fun and so they don’t even seem to be aware of how much they are learning and growing through these activities.
I’m so glad that I have the opportunity to spend a J-term interning at HAWC! I’ve had so many great experiences and I still have two whole weeks left!
Cheers ladies and gents :)
